I frequently try software from comp.binaries.mac and anonymous ftp sites. This of course requires BinHex and Stuffit conversion in most cases following download. However, 1) BinHex's overhead increases download time over a plain binary file and 2) Manually converting multiple files can get very tedious. On a hunch, I poked around for a unix utility that would de-hqx files on the account, using wildcards. However, the only utilites I found converted the BinHex file into three forks suitable for MacTerminal, which I do not use. Are there any utils available which produce a single MacBinary file suitable for download with Red or Kermit, given an hqx file? Yup, There is a program called mcvert written by Doug Moore of Cornell that does what you want and much much more. In my opinion, this is the best mac <-> unix utility out there. I've tried sending the source code to comp.sources.mac, but so far the moderator hasn't posted it. E-mail to me if anyone is interested. I'll get permission from Doug before releasing en-masse. -Ken K -- Ken Konecki "A squeegee by any other name wouldn't sound as funny" e-mail:kenk@tellab5.UUCP -or- ...!uunet!tellab5!kenk U.S. Mail: 1271 Portchester Circle, Carol Stream, IL 60188

There is a version of xbin that will convert either to a MacTerminal format (3 files) or MacBinary. Check for "xbin-to-binary" or something like that (I just got it yesterday and it works *GREAT*). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Glenn L. I haven't been able to reach ken at the mail address given in the above message, but if he reads this, I am interested in mcvert. Thanks. Chet Wood apple!arc!chet

In the meantime, I sent the mcvert source to the moderator of comp.sources.mac a few days ago, and provided outbound mail works (which it seems to) it should appear whenever the moderator gets around to posting it. Or just mail me a copy? My site doesn't get comp.sources.mac. 2) Would someone tell me how to go about posting something to comp.binaries.mac? I sent out a message on that board and this one a few weeks ago, but have received no response. Thanks, Alex -- Alex Chaffee chaffee@uvm-gen.uvm.edu -----
