[comp.sys.mac] InfoWorld wants info from 'anonomous source'

mithomas@bsu-cs.bsu.edu (Michael Thomas Niehaus) (04/29/89)

O.K. Who is the spy out there? This morning at about 11:00 I received a
phone call from an InfoWorld reporter, getting me out of bed. Why was I
in bed at 11:00? I was up past four working on my final CS project...

Anyway, they were looking for information from a person who would remain
"an unnamed source" on Apple's outline font system. Apparently they wanted
to know how it will work for an upcoming article. Someone on this network
gave them my name and telephone number (don't ask me how they found that --
I don't know). I told them that I knew nothing about it; I had only heard
a rumor (that someone else initiated) that such a system exists. Here is
how the conversation went:

Reporter: "Do you know how Apple's new outline fonts work?"
Me: "I'm not even sure that something like that exists."
Reporter: "Well, it does exist. Do you know how it works?"
Me: "No, I only heard a rumor about it on Usenet."
Reporter: "Well, do you have any ideas about how such a system would work?"
Me (somewhat flustered): "No."
Reporter: "You don't have to worry about me giving out the names of my sources."
Me: "If I were to give you information, I would want my name to go with
it. I'm not an 'unknown source.' I don't know anything about the
rumored fonts that you are talking about."
Reporter: "But they are not just rumored."
Me: "I don't really care. I don't know anything about them."
Reporter: "Alright. But feel free to call if you do hear any information
           about them."
Me: "I'll probably hear the details after you do."
Reporter: "Well, thanks for the information."
Me: "Don't mention it."

This raises several questions:

1. Why the &^%# would anyone assume that I know how the outline fonts work?
I don't even know how the Postscript fonts work, and I must say that I
have very little desire to learn.
2. Why do things like this happen when I am trying to sleep?
3. How did that person get my phone number? I can't even manage to get
the number of the person living right next door to me...

If anyone else wants to call and ask me about anything, my number is
317-285-3614. But don't expect to find me there. After next week, I am
moving to a different complex and getting a different number (end of the
school year!).

I'm going back to bed. I feel much better now. Later...

-Michael
