[comp.sys.mac] Memory upgrade advice for 512k Mac

rr21@isl1.ri.cmu.edu (Rajan Ramaswamy) (05/01/89)

Hi,

I have a Mac 512ke (ie a Mac 512 with the 800k internal drive and 128k ROM)
which I have been primarily using as a terminal. I now want to do some more
heavy duty stuff and am therefore shopping for a memory upgrade. I would
like to upgrade to at least 1 Meg or preferably 2 Meg total memory.

If you are aware of sources other than Apple for this kind of upgrade I will
be grateful for all the information that you can provide me in this regard
(description, addresses, costs etc).

Thanks in advance,

Rajan

I've upgraded two 512ke's with the Dove 548s upgrade. That upgrades them to
a total of 2Meg plus a SCSI. The only problem I have had is that one of them
occasionally worked loose from the heat and caused intermittents. Popping
the case and reseating the connectors takes care of that. That board is
actually dead, currently, because I broke off a connector pin on one of the
pressure clamps and haven't bothered to fix it (which is a cautionary tale:
be careful handling it. More careful than I was).

I've found these to be a good, cost effective way of upgrading. (actually,
if you want to buy an almost working memory board without the SCSI, we could
probably work out a cheap deal...) It's fully compatible with just about
everything -- it works fine with my Jasmine disks and if you install the
Xparam INIT, compatible with 6.0.2 and 6.0.3 (without the Xparam init, the
only thing that doesn't work is choosing beep sounds).

Bookends. What a wonderful thought.

A company called Dove makes both 1MB & 2MB upgrades for your
particular Mac. The best prices are available through mail order
companies, for 1 MB - MacSnap 524E ~ $290, for 2MB - MacSnap 548E ~
$550.

Check out you favorite Mac magazine for the dealers and best
prices. I also have the same system (512k upgraded) and am
interested in having 2MB of memory. Dove is the only upgrade I
have seen, does anyone know of any others avialable preferrably for
< $$$$.
