[comp.sys.mac] Small Problem w/SE30

martya@cpl-mfh.UUCP (Marty Adelman) (04/17/89)

I recenntly upgraded from an SE with a 50 meg internal to an SE/30 with
4 meg ram and what I assume to be an 80 meg internal Quantum drive. When
I received the new machine I upgraded the system on my old machine to 6.0.3
and the backed the Hard disk up and restored to the new hard drive. The
new machine has been running flawlessly except that every once in a while
the hard disk turns on when I'm just sitting there doing nothing. I checked
for virus's and none where found. Has anyone else noticed this or should I
call in an exorcist?

Thanks in advance,
   Marty Adelman

[Insert "Tubular Bells" here]

Got the same model SEx, same drive, etc., and noticed this too -- but it
occurs only when I have Hypercard running under Multifinder in the
background/foreground. I assumed that had something to do with it, but
that's just a guess.

"To the unwashed public, that woman is a star. But
to those who know her, she's a commodity who would
                            sell her own bowel movement."

I noticed that too. It just didn't bother me (much). I did wonder what it
was doing though.

Every Quantum 40 Meg HD I've seen (three to date I've installed) does this. I
have no idea why though. I don't believe there is a problem - it may just be
the caching firmware?

Since I received quite a few responses from others about this phenomena I
thought I would post the rather obvious answer about why it was occuring
in my system. I fill pretty silly not realising this in the first place.

It was pointed out to me that multifinder will occassionally hcek the
desktop to see if any programs have made changes. Since I rarely used
multifinder before I purchased the SE/30 I had never noticed the drive
accesses before. Unfortunately I do not have the letter from the person who
pointed this out to me, so I cannot give credit where credit is do.

It was also pointed out to me that if you use a spooler or the disk cache you
also observe this phenomena, but I don't use either.

Thanks for the responses folks.

I've noticed this same phenomenon on my SE with internal 20 meg (from Apple)...

Are there any INIT or CDEV files that would cause this? I don't have a screen-
saver (I use Stars), and can't think of anything else off hand that I think
would need to check the drive at all (no INITs that I have currently).

Weird.

This sounds extremely suspect to me. While I am not 100% certain about this,
and would like to hear from someone who is, I am pretty confident...

The Finder does not need to check the desktop. It does something much more
immediate (hooks the file traps or some such, I would guess). If you
create a new file under multifinder, you will notice that the Finder becomes
aware of the new file almost immediately. So I don't think it needs to check
the DeskTop file- which wouldn't store all the information it needs, anyway,
and the file catalog would have to be checked for all open folders, which
would be much too slow.

the disk cache is write-through (almost. this gets messy) so I don't think it
can cause writes at random times. (Clearly reads aren't at isssue.)

The spooler, of course, would cause this behavior.

There are some programs, though, which DO cause this behavior. MacTerminal
is a notable example.
