[comp.sys.mac] Software Security

wardwell@uvm-gen.UUCP (Les Wardwell) (05/03/89)

Hello,

I need to find out some information on software security. Specifically,
how to keep someone from copying via the finder. I believe most security
software locks or protects disk drives and volumes, but my situation needs
are to have a user have read-write access to a drive, but not walk out the
door with some of the drives contents. I thought I got wind of a DA/INIT
that locked the icon positions on the desktop so that dragging and copying
via the finder were disabled. Does this animal exist? Also, I believe this
situation would be less intimidating than using a muzzle. Any suggestions or
information would be helpful.

Thanks in advance,
Les Wardwell

AppleShare (2.0) lets you do this by having a "copy protect" feature that can
be turned on for any file that prevents the Finder from being able to copy
that file. I would assume that this doesn't help you if you are talking
about local drives.

There is a little cdev called Guard Dog that does just that, but you can
bypass the locking of the desktop by press a modifier key while you drag
(key is choosable from the control panel; chose from Command, Option, etc.).
Look for a copy in the various archives. Maybe it could be modified to
look for some non-existant key?
