[comp.sys.mac] Switch-launching when Suitcase II is running

mark@mtuxo.att.com (XG1W6-M.PERKINS) (05/02/89)

Has anyone else had trouble switch-launching when Suitcase II
is running? Specifically, when I try to launch from another disk
(actually a different Rodime partition), it launches the program OK,
but when I exit to the Finder, I get trouble. First a dialog
appears saying something like "The disk HD2 needs minor repairs,
do you want to repair?". Click "Yes" (or whatever) and then a dialog
appears saying "Unable to rebuild desktop on HD2". At this point the
Mac reboots. If Suitcase is disabled, then everything goes as expected,
i.e., no complaints about needing repairs, just clean exit to Finder.

Does anyone have any clues as to what is going on? I've removed
all other inits and the problem persists, so it doesn't appear to be
an interaction with other inits. Also, the problem occurs independent
of wheter Suitcase has any Font or DA files open.

    System configuration:

		Mac II w/ 5MB
Rodime 144MB internal (partitioned into 3 approx. 45MB)
		SuperMac 19" Trinitron
		System/Finder 6.0.2
		Suitcase II, version 1.2.

I don't know if this is the problem or not, but the current version of
Suitcase II is 1.2.2. There is an updater application that was posted to
comp.binaries.mac and to the archives at sumex-aim.stanford.edu that
will upgrade your copy of Suitcase II (only!) to 1.2.2. I'd check this out
to see if the problem still occurs, and then contact Fifth Generation...

This is a bug introduced in Suitcase II version 1.2.2.  It is fixed in 1.2.3;
I hope to upload an Updater application which updates earlier versions of
Suitcase II to 1.2.3 no later than 7 May (it make take a few days thereafter
for the moderator to post it to comp.binaries.mac).

The cited message reports the Suitcase II version in use as "1.2."; I am
assuming it is 1.2.2.

Meanwhile, the bug in 1.2.2 can be fixed via a hexadecimal patch as follows:

 search for: 21C9 0A50 2078
 change to: """1 """" """"

Note: depending on whether your Suitcase II 1.2.2 was obtained via applying
an Updater to a previous version, or direct from FGS, the above values may
not be word aligned; that is, you may see:

 1021 C90A 5020 78... which you would change to:
 """" "1"" """" ""...

If you use ResEdit, edit the INIT 128 resource in Suitcase II 1.2.2.

[details of how to patch version 1.2.2]

In my original article, I mis-typed the version number of Suitcase II.
I indeed have version 1.2.2 and will apply the patch supplied by Steve.
Thanks for the help, and prompt reply.
