[comp.sys.mac] Passwords for Macs?

nowlin@gramian.harvard.edu (Bill Nowlin) (05/13/89)

Of course I'm new to this group, so this has probably been dis-
cussed already. If so, maybe someone will email me a summary.

At the lab where I work, we have lots of people wandering around,
and several macs. The problem is that some folks, often we don't
know whom, are adding software to the system, and sometimes this
software is riddled by viruses.

We need a way to keep the riff-raff off of our macs.

Is there software available to make a mac inaccessible to indi-
viduals who don't know a password? Is it public domain, or for
sale? Does it allow individual passwords and bookkeeping, or a
simple global password to unlock the machine? How does it work
for machines connected to Tops network?

We leave the machine on virtually all day, so controlling the boot
process is not a problem.

Thanks in advance,

Bill Nowlin
