[comp.sys.mac] Generic Notice INit

lulue@manta.NOSC.MIL (Dan Lulue ) (05/10/89)

Does anyone know of a generic notice init that would place a message on
the screen at startup time? We need something that places a notice on
user's screens at startup, and we want to be able to compose the
message.

Thanks in advance.

System will do this for you. Save a file in MacPaint format and
rename it StartupScreen. Put this file in the System Folder.
System will display the contents of StartupScreen at boot time.

What our public MacLab here has done is just use a Startup Screen,
composed well enough to catch the eye. For that matter, they then use
backdrop to keep the screen as the Desktop. The screen is covered with
important novice tips, like: "DRAG YOUR DISK TO THE TRASH WHEN DONE!".
Seems to work like a charm -- they've been doing it for a year now.

This isn't QUITE true. A Mac Plus or SE will display the contents of
a file called StartupScreen at startup time, but I don't think it takes
a MacPaint format file... there's a program out there somewhere called
ScreenMaker that produces files of the appropriate format.

On a Mac II, the StartupScreen file should contain a PICT resource of
ID=0, and this will be displayed at startup. The PICT can be in
color or greyscale, but should not have a custom CLUT (color look-up
table), since the Mac doesn't load the CLUT for the startup picture.

I have no idea which of these is appropriate for an SE/30, but I assume
the PICT version is correct for a IIx or IIcx.

.
There's an INIT, I think it is, called MacWelcome that will place
a message on the screen at startup time. The message is easily
changed. I've seen it run once; it might be on the major
commercial services and bulletin boards, and I know for sure that
it's on Aurora Borealis in Columbus, OH, 614-471-6209.

Sorry to throw a bucket of water on this idea, but consider the fact
that a startup screen is generally visible for only a few short seconds.
If the message is anything more complicated than "INSERT A DISK", some
sort of INIT will be required to halt the startup process until the user
has read all the information (and dismisses the notice, probably by
clicking an OK button).

Such an INIT exists; I think it's called MacWelcome (or something
similar). Try the BMUG library, or one of the net archives.
