[comp.sys.mac] Making an MFS disk

blackman@phoenix.Princeton.EDU (Scott Michael Blackman) (05/10/89)

Is it still possible to make an MFS disk with System 6.0.2? I am
looking for the ancient "Flat" filing system on 400K disks. Thanks.

Hold down the Option key while inserting a blank diskette or choosing
Erase Disk fromthe Special menu.

Anytime you format a disk as single-sided, it will use MFS. You don't even
have to hold down any awkward key sets.

Actually, that will get you a 400K HFS disk. The finder automatically
formats all 400K disks as MFS UNLESS you do the option-key trick.

I believe that holding down the option key when you format
single-sided will cause an HFS 400k volume to be created. I seem to
recall a TN describing how to format 800k MFS volumes, but I don't
recall the details.

Boot a Mac Plus or 512ke from System 2.0. You can then format
800k MFS volumes all day long. I have never seen Apple endorse this
technique anywhere.
