[comp.sys.mac] Help with Accessing Sumex

news@tut.cis.ohio-state.edu (news) (05/13/89)

newsgroup keeps talking about. This is what happened when I tried
logging in as 'guest' with the same password:
From: gadkari@sioux.cis.ohio-state.edu (Sanjay Gadkari)
Path: sioux.cis.ohio-state.edu!gadkari

gadkari> telnet sumex.stanford.edu
Trying 36.44.0.6 ...
Connected to SUMEX-AIM.Stanford.EDU.
Escape character is '^]'.

SunOS UNIX (sumex-aim)

login: guest
Password:
Last login: Fri May 12 16:59:03 from sioux.cis.ohio-s
SunOS Release 4.0 (SUMEX-AIM) #9: Sat Mar 18 08:49:13 PST 1989
/bin/nologin: No such file or directory
No shell
Connection closed by foreign host.
gadkari> exit

Is something I'm doing wrong? Next, even if some kind soul does explain how
to get into sumex, where are the archives on the filesystem?

Please reply direct to me unless this is of general interest.

Thanks in advance
Sanjay

First problem: you have to use FTP, not telnet. "ftp sumex-aim.stanford.edu"

>login: guest

Second problem: you should login as "anonymous", not "guest".

Once you get on with FTP, the files are located in the info-mac directory.

The login name is 'anonymous' not guest then it will ask for your name
as a password.
