I have been requested to ask around for information about what "people" (or institutions) are charging for OCR (Optical Character Reading/Scanning). We at the University of Toronto, are evaluating the cost/charge for owning such a machine. What I would like is the following: 1) which machine (and model) are you using? [ie. Kurzweil 4000 or others] 2) what is being charged and how much? [ie. is charge based on number of characters read or the amount of operator time, or both, or other?] 3) what type of work is mostly done? [ie. "simple" text in Times Roman or other fonts. A rough brake down in percentage would be most usefull; something like -- 60% Times Roman, 15% Cyrillic fonts, 10% Greek fonts etc. Any other information would be appreciated.] 4) what is the machine configuration? [ie. offline with tape drive, or attached to a mainframe for data storage, etc.] Any other additional information, caveat emptors, etc. would be very welcomed. Please mail replies to: ...!{utzoo,decvax,ihnp4}!utcs!lidio If there are sufficient replies I will summarize. As they say -- "thanks in advance" Lidio Presutti Humanities Computer Application Support University of Toronto Computing Services
