[comp.sys.mac] An uncooperative HD and MAC II

gford@nunki.usc.edu (Gregory Ford) (05/22/89)

I hope that someone out there can help out with this problem I seem to have
acquired. I have a Mac II, with a Rodime 1400 RX (140 Mb internal),
2 megs RAM, and 256 color. System 6.0.2/Finder 6.1
Here's the problem.

It seems that I am unable to unstuff (with Stuffit 1.51 or 1.31) or
unpack (with Packit III) and archive that contains a file with type
APPL (i.e. Applications). These files always show up on the desktop as a
document and using ResEdit, I see that these files have no Type or Creator.
(It's blank)...I have tried to put in the type and creator as denoted in
the stuffit archive, but that doesn't work either...If I copy the exact same
application of Stuffit or Packit onto a floppy and take it to a roommates'
SE and try to unstuffit it, it works like a charm. I can only guess that there
is a conflict with type and creator's with another file already on the
HD. Also, I have rebuilt the desktop, that doesn't help. Basically, I have
tried everything but a complete backup and reformatting the HD. Like I said,
this problem is with only APPL types, anything else becomes what it is
supposed to be. I have installed a new system, but, of course, that didn't
seem to help. I did manage to receive a file by Modem (which initially came
across with no type or creator), restart the computer, insert the file
type and creator, restart again, and then find that the durn thing worked.
But I haven't been able to recreate what happened with another application.

In Addition, My Font/DA mover (Ver 3.8), doesn't install new fonts or DA's
anymore. It gives me an error when I try to copy it into a file I have
that Suitcase II opens at startup. (I can, however, have suitcase open the
DA file directly, and it will load into the Apple Menu.

Hey any ideas out there?
