[comp.sys.mac] Strange Crash--No Boot--Mac Plus

Last week I had a strange crash which I haven't yet
solved. I have a Mac Plus with a Data Frame Hard
Disk. I was attempting to transfer a database from
a Kaypro II into the Macintosh with MicroPhone.

I set up Microphone to receive. As soon as I initiated
sending the first file, I got a system crash, the bomb
with a message saying I'd have to restart. When I tried
to do so, the system was unable to boot, displaying the
system icon with a questionmark.

I disconnected the null modem cable from the printer port,
restoring the hardware to its previous configuration but
it still wouldn't boot. Recently, I tried to boot from a
floppy (I'm not sure I installed the system correctly on
it so I'm going to try again). When I did so, it very
briefly displayed the Welcome to Macintosh rectangle (for
about a second) and then the text disappeared and the outline
rectangle began flashing on and off about once a second or
so.

Has anyone else seen such behavior or know what the problem
may be? I'm hoping that it isn't a serious hardware failure.
Does the fact that the rectangle appeared mean that the ROM
is OK and that the plus at least may be intact?

Thanks for any help.
