[comp.sys.mac] Serial Disk Drive gone BAD...Need help

bremer@tekigm2.MEN.TEK.COM (Ron Bremer) (05/25/89)

I have a Mac Plus with a serial hard drive (20Mb). I purchased the system used
about six months ago. The day after I setup the system, the system could
not recognize the hard disk and asked if I wanted to initialize it. I
tried power down/up cycles, order of power ups of peripherals, disconnecting
peripherals, leaving it powered on for a day and then trying. Nothing worked.
I decided to go ahead and initialize the disk, but the initialization failed.

The guy I bought it from took it to Computerland for repair. They replaced
the drive, no change. They replaced the controller board, no change. They
replaced the cables, no change. They replaced the power supply, no change.
The only thing left is the case :-(. I am not sure if they ever had all the
new components in the drive at the same time.

I'm at a loss as to what to do. The guy I bought it from moved out of the
state so I don't think he will be interested in helping. Has anyone had a
similar problem? What was the problem? Do I just eat the cost and buy a
new drive? Are these drive trouble prone?

Thanks for any help you can give.
