Well, I'm getting down to the final decisions on a new hard drive. What I'd like to ask is whether any of you have any comments regarding the price, reliability, styling, and general functionality of either Magic, LaCie, or CMS hard drives in the 40 to 60Mb range. Please e-mail to me. Thanks for your time and input. Jim Collymore

I tried to Email this, but it didn't work, so I'm just posting it. I don't really know much about the drives you mentioned, but there was a review of slightly larger drives in MacWorld about two months ago I think. I am sending you a copy of a posting I made a while ago about Everex drives. I have know had mine a month and I think it's great. I carry it to and from work daily, and I have had no problem with it at all. Give them a thought. The price is pretty good. Good Luck. ************************************************************************* Everex is offering an educational discount on much of their equipment in the EMAC line. This includes internal and external hard drives, tape units and scanner. The discount is available to anyone associated with a university. They seem to measure that by whether they can ship it to you at some university address. In addition, if you can wrangle a purchase order number they will ship to you and give you 30 days to decide to keep the unit. Examples of prices are: EMAC-40 Plus (19 ms access, external) $629 best mail order ~$800 EMAC-60 Impact (29 ms access, external) $695 best mail order ~$800 The 40 Plus uses a Quantum drive while the Impact series uses Epson drives. The guy to contact is Gil Takemori at (800) 821-0806 Ext. 2585. He is Associate Sales Rep. Mention my name to him. It won't make a difference in price, but I think he might be interested in seeing what kind of response this gets. I'd also appreciate it if you could me a message too. I'd like to see how many people pick up on this. I just happened on this deal, and I ended up getting the 60 Impact HD for a SE I use. Gil was extremely helpful, a pleasure to do business with. He knows I'm posting this, but I'm doing it on my own initiative in response to all the inquires about what drives to buy. By the way, the 80 meg. Impact drive got a very good review in MacWorld this month and uses the Quantum drive. It is $958 through this deal. Lester Diamond LD0H@ANDREW.CMU.EDU
