Earlier I posted my hopes that Version 4 would solve the long-standing edit buffer problem. This weekend I linked 10 chapters (215 pages) and pulled down the Index command. In a few minutes I had what formerly took me up to a day to do. My client saved a lot of money and I made the deadline. Actually, the manual is in two parts and I had to do an identical thing for the other nine chapters (122 pages). There is a little gotcha that you might want to be aware of though. I didn't want either index at the end of the last chapter, so I immediately copied it to another document and deleted it from the final chapters. The two final chapters grew from 20K to 75K and 102K respectively, according to Get Info back at the Finder. Word still sees an appropriate number of characters on a save and in the Word count. But the point is that after running the indexes the same files no longer fit on the floppy I was preparing for the typesetter. To avoid this, do one of two things: Make a backup copy of the final chapter before running the index or quit the final chapter without saving. The other part of this post regards printing. I had already given the service bureau a test document containing graphics that do not print properly on the LaserWriter IINTX. Basically the white text on black background (done with bold outline format in SuperPaint 2.0) shifts around. It moves to the right exposing the outline because there is no longer a black background. Also other characters shifted around and got sort of scrunched up. The Linotronic did the same thing, yet my printout from the QMS PS810 was fine. So the upshot was that we decided not to typeset it. They'll just have to shoot my originals from the QMS. While I'm delighted that my printer does such a good job, I don't know where that leaves me at work, and of course, the incompatibility is not good. Shirley Kehr
