[comp.sys.mac] Lode Runner

pbk@mtgzx.att.com (p.b.kidd) (05/19/89)

I have recently purchased the game Lode Runner and found that it only
partially works on a MAC II/IIx. The game works fine on a Plus or SE.
The problem seems to be when you use the mouse for movement instead of
the keyboard. At that point the game quits with the message that Lode
runner has quit unexpectedly. If you try and use the editor for the
game which is mouse driven also the same error occurs. The error occurs
when the mouse button is hit. I have tried it under finder and
multifinder and several versions of the system with no success.

Does anybody out there know why this fails on the MACII and not the
Plus or the SE. Is there a way to get this to work? (specific
system, patch, etc). The people at Broderbund who make the game said
it does not work on a MAC II and as it was written in 1984 it will
probably not be fixed. They seemed to think it would not work at all
but the game part (not the editor) works with keyboard input. Any ideas?

Its a shame that Lode Runner seems to be getting phased out. I've played
a LOT of Mac games, and Lode Runner still ranks as one of the very best.
The editor makes all the difference. With it, you can turn a silly little
arcade game into a set of puzzles of surprising depth. Newer games may
be flashier, but most of them just aren't as good.

By the way, Lode Runner was never really meant to be played with a mouse.
Use the keyboard, or you will never get anywhere. For that matter, you
should use the two handed style, drilling with the 's' and 'f' keys, and
moving with your right hand.

Its too bad that you can't use the editor on your machine because
of the mouse problems. If its any consolation, I've got a bunch of
Lode Runner screens that I'd be happy to share. I actually went to
the trouble of transcribing the 50 Championship Lode Runner screens
to the Mac, because a Mac version of that game was never released.
I've also got 20 or so screens of my own design, some of which
are unimaginably difficult.

While we're on this subject, is there anybody out there who has some
screens to share? I'd love to breathe some life into this wonderful
old game, and my own ideas for screens are kind of played out.
If there are any other afficionados out there, please
get in touch! I'd be happy to send out my own screens whether you
have some to trade or not.

Well, I have collected a number of sets of Lode Runner screens of various BBSs
and will make them available by mailing them to info-mac. I will try that
route for the first time since nothing I've mailed to the moderator of binaries
has ever been received (or if it has, it's never been posted).

On a related subject, try Space Station Pheta. It appears to be a variant of
Lode Runner and all the LR fans that I know seem to enjoy it. The current
version of Pheta is (I believe) 1.5.

Yow!!! The response to my call for Lode Runner screens was
greater than I had hoped. Several people have offered
to send screen sets. My fingers are twitching in anticipation.

I am now proposing to act as a clearing house for these screens
and send the whole collection to everyone who expresses an
interest.

I got mail messages from the following individuals:

	Chris Muir
	Mike Ching
	Mike Engber
	Geoff
	Ken McLeod
	Bruce Holm
	John Babcock
	Daniel LaLiberte
	Chih-Hsiang Chou
	Stuart Ericson

I will take the liberty of adding the other posters, pbk and Dennis Cohen
to the list although they did not contact me directly. We don't get
info-mac at this site, but I have a friend working on that angle for me.
If Mr. Cohen's screens show up there, I'll add them to the collection.

If your name is missing or you want to join in, please don't hesitate
to get in touch.

I am sending out replies by email to make sure I can establish contact
with everyone. If you don't hear from me in a day or so, please try to
get in touch again. So far, I have only had apparent trouble in contacting
Mr. Holm, and Mr. Chou. Don't worry; I'll keep trying.

If possible, I would like to archive the screen sets using Stuffit
and email them to everyone. I have already received a screen file
in this form from Ken McLeod and everything worked out just fine.
The amount of compression you get from Stuffit is astonishing!
If you aren't equipped with Stuffit, we'll figure out something else.
I'll send diskettes in the mail if I have to.

I have added Tom Dubinski to the list of respondents, and I
have just sent everyone two sets of screens, mine and McLeod's.
If you don't receive them, let me know.

Meanwhile, keep those screens and letters comin' in.

I have some load runner stuff I'd like to send you but I can't find
a mail route. I'm on arpanet so you should be able to reach me from
any UUCP/arpanet gateway. I think the address should be something like:

     addamax!<path-to-gateway>!nathan@teleos.com

Other arpa address to try if that fails are:
	nathan@ai.sri.com
	wilson@csli.stanford.edu
