A while back I asked if anyone had a print driver for the Mac that would let you pick the paper tray on the NEC LC890 so we could do letterhead from the first tray and bond from the rear tray. I received no replies other than from those who also wanted to do it. Today a work around dawned on me. I tried the following and it works. We are using Word 4.0 but this will work with Word 3.x and any other processor that allows variable headers and postscript code. I formatted a letter by selecting First Page Special from the Section menu. Then I set the very first line in the First Page Header to be "statusdict begin 2 setpapertray end" followed by a return. I then set this style to be PostScript as described in the manual. I closed this header and opened the regular header and put this as the first line "statusdict begin 1 setpapaertray end" followed by a return and what I wanted for the header. I set the style of the first line to be PostScript as described in the manual. I then made this file a read only template file. Low and behold it works. The first page prints from the front bin and all the rest print from the backbin. The most important thing seems to be that the commands must appear before any printable text from the current page. I hope this gets to all who asked for info. Richard Crispin Dept. of Psychology Bitnet: psych@watdcs University of Waterloo Unix : psych@watdcsu.UWaterloo.ca Waterloo, Ont. I tried something like this that didn't work, probably because the PS instructions were not the first text in the document. Also, i read in another post that PostScript doesn't work with background printing turned on. Is this the case for switching paper trays? By the way, i'm using a QMS PS800-II. They include a DA called Dual Tray Select or something, but i've been unable to get it to work. -- - Scott

It's been a long time, so I don't remember which one set which tray (believe 0 sets the default tray). serverdict begin 0 exitserver statusdict begin 0 setdefaultpapertray and serverdict begin 0 exitserver statusdict begin 1 setdefaultpapertray They either have to be the first thing in a document and in PostScript style in Word or you can send them using SendPS or any PostScript utility before sending your document. It's a kludge, but it works. Mark B. Johnson AppleLink: mjohnson Developer Technical Support domain: mjohnson@Apple.com Apple Computer, Inc.
