[comp.sys.mac] wanted: screen saver than makes screen black

robin@csun.edu (Robin Goldstone ) (06/01/89)

Is there a screen saver in the public domain that will darken the screen
without any graphics or anything? Apparantly there are some people on our
campus who are "distracted" by the graphics produced by such programs as
Moire and Pyro.

Please post replies if appropriate or else e-mail to:

One should be careful about this: when you approach such a machine,
wouldn't you be likely to flip the on/off switch?

Not if you knew that was the expected behavior of the screen saver.
The screenblank program distributed with SunOS completely blanks the
screen, and I have never had the urge to flip the on/off switch (then
again, I always leave it turned on). I like the gliding icon of "Fade
To Black" even better, especially for my MAC at home which I do turn
off from time-to-time. I do *not* like busy, entertaining screen
savers.

I am thinking of purchasing Pyro (because of the price). Can you turn the
fireworks off or are you stuck with them?

I use the "AutoBlack" screen saver (available from Sumex), and it just
puts up a Mac icon which periodically moves around the screen (to
avoid burning in any particular location). I don't know if it works
on Mac //-class machines, though (I've used it on a 512KE & SE).
I think that "Pyro" can be configured to just display an icon too.

Larry Rosenstein wrote an INIT called AutoIdle that shows an icon in a
random position on the screen every second. I've used it for quite
awhile on my Mac II with no problems. Unfortunately, I've never seen
it wander over the net (it's not at sumex).

OR if you were using a Mac II.

You can change them to a clock appearing atdifferen, "pseudo-"random
places all over the screen.

I received Pyro! with my Suitcase II upgrade and by chance COULDN'T get the
fireworks to kick in. Instead I got a (nice-looking) analog clock hopping
around the blackened screen. I called 5th Generation Systems to find out how
to get the fireworks, instead. I forget what they said because I soon got
Moire (which I prefer). However, you do have 2 screen-blanking options when
you get Pyro!

Just FYI.

Why don't you try CDEV Moire v2.22, it is a shareware screensaver. Moire is
available through anonymous ftp at sumex.

Actually, I've been wondering if anyone thought of just manually turning
down the screen whenever your screen saver's movement is bothering you.
That gives you the best of both worlds: it kicks in whether you're there
or not and if you are there, you'll probably remember that you turned it
down.
