Recently, I bought a Macintosh plus and non-Apple external hard disk drive. They work fine except one problem. The problem is as follows: Even though I insert the system diskette into the 3 1/2-inch internal floppy disk drive, of course, it has at least both 'finder' and 'system' files in it, Mac, first of all, searches the 'system' file in the hard disk drive, and 'boot' from the hard disk drive. The floppy icon appears on the Finder desktop when the Mac is 'booted' from the hard disk drive. This means, the floppy diskette is not ejected when booting from the hard disk drive. If I remove the system folder from the hard disk drive, Mac tries to search the hard disk drive first. However, since Mac cannot find the 'system' file in the drive, it, in turn, searches the file in the floppy diskette, and finally 'boot' from the diskette. This problem seems to be not so serious for me, since I usually boot Mac from the hard disk drive, but this problem seems to be strange. Are there anyone who can teach me how to 'boot' my lovely Mac from the floppy diskette first? Thank you in advance.

Sure -- just keep your hard drive turned off until after the Mac has booted from the floppy, then turn it on. Of course, you won't be able to access the hard drive unless the system on the floppy is up-to-date enough to use the SCSI port. Hope this helps! -- Thanks Chris Cleeland, Tulane University Disclaimer: I haven't said anything worth not claiming!!!

The Macintosh will automatically start up from a floppy disk ... so long as the floppy has a _working_ System Folder. From page 215 of the Macintosh System Software User's Guide (the latest version of it, which is 6.0): "Your computer uses an order of precedence in looking for a startup disk. Searching in this order, it uses the first startup disk it finds: - internal 3.5-inch disk drive 1 - internal or external 3.5-inch disk drive 2 (if there is one) - startup device set in the Control Panel of a Macintosh SE or Macintosh II - internal hard disk or SCSI hard disk with device ID 0 - devices connected to the SCSI port in decling device priority number (from 6 to 0)" So, Kuniaki (the original poster) should still power up his external hard disk first. Then, insert the floppy into the Mac Plus' internal drive, and then turn it on. If the floppy's system software is good, it'll boot from the floppy. Incidentally, I believe that "disk drive 1" is the lower drive on a dual-floppy Mac SE and the right drive on a dual-floppy Mac II or IIx.
