[comp.sys.mac] Control Panel Problem

caesar@otis.DAB.GE.COM (06/12/89)

I just copied System 6.0.2 from GEnie onto my Mac SE along
with Finder 6.1. Everything seems to work okay, except the
control panel now seems to be missing a few things. Items
like double click speed and startup device are there, but the
background pattern and volume control have disappeared.

What did I screw up? Can revision mismatches cause a problem
like this?

Do you have the appropriate system cdevs in your system folder?
Control panel offers you control of whatever such cdevs are
there. If you don't, for example, have the Sound or Monitors
cdevs in your system folder, you won't have control over those
functions. If you do have them in place, then something else
is wrong.

Sounds to me like you are missing the CDEV called "General"
Is there a file called "General" in your system folder?

More to the point did you copy the installer scripts and program as well?
Starting with System 5 (and definitely a must with system 6.0 and up) you must
use the installer scripts to install the system files on your drive. There are
all kinds of resources that need to be copied as well as the files themselves.
Gone are the days of dragging the new system into the system folder. The docs
should have pointed this out .... you MUST use the installer.
