Is there a way to control access to a laserwriter or at least monitor who prints how many pages? This would be done on a network using AppleShare. *Ideally* I'd like to be able to limit access to the printer to users of a specified group and then know how many pages each person has printed. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as I have no idea how to go about doing this. Many thanks in advance. Tom Carter carter@portia.stanford.edu

From MacWeek, 13 June 1989, page 74, Mac The Knife: "Olduvai's FontShare is in for an upgrade, too. The new version, planned for an August release, will have several new features, ranging from the ability to enable and disable the start-up page to automatically down- loading fonts to the laser printer at start-up (just like Suitcase). For compulsive types, the new FontShare will include a feature that keeps track of pages printed by each individual Mac on a network." From an OLDUVAI Corporation PRESS RELEASE (For Immediate Release): "South Miami, FL, June 19, 1989 -- OLDUVAI Corporation announced today that it has sold ICON-IT!, FONTSHARE, ART-FONTS (Vol. 1/2/3) and ARTCLIPS (Vol 1/2) to Tactic Software, a newly formed software publishing and development company based in Miami, Florida." An accompanying press release from TACTIC Software gives the following contact information: CONTACT: Jay Jason Bartlett (305) 378-4110 or (800) 344-4818 FAX (305) 232-7467 Disclaimers: I am only reporting information which has been previously published. I am not responsible for supplying the above information to Mac the Knife, and do not know the source of the rumor. I AM the author of the LaserWriter Accounting program to which Mac the Knife is referring, and I believe that I am close to an agreement with Tactic Software that would allow them to market this program with FontShare. However, we have not yet signed any agreement.

Read the Appleshare docs. There's a built-in page count for each user in the spooler package for Appleshare. Don't know if it will limit access, though. -- David Bolduc via cmhGate - Net 226 fido<=>uucp gateway Col, OH UUCP: ...!osu-cis!n8emr!cmhgate!382!54!David.Bolduc INET: David.Bolduc@f54.n382.z1.FIDONET.ORG
