[comp.sys.mac] Imagewriter I Cables?

newman@ut-emx.UUCP (Dave Newman) (06/03/89)

All,

What kind of Cable is needed to connect a new
Mac SE to a very old Imagewriter I? My folks
just got a new Mac SE to replace their 128K
Mac, and the cable that they got does not work.

Thanks,

>>Dave

Your Apple dealer has a HyperCard stack that answers
questions like this. You click on the picture of the computer,
and on the picture of the peripheral, and it replies with the
Apple part number of the appropriate cable.

You simply need a Null-Modem cable wired for a din-8 (the Mac SE) to
a DB-25 (the Imagewriter I). If it helps, this is also the same cable that
one would use to connect a Hayes-type modem (with a DB-25) to an SE (or
other Din-8 equipped Mac).

NO NO NO! The Mac plus to DB-25 modem is NOT a standard null modem cable.
The cable to attach a Mac SE to and Imagewriter I must be designated
a Mac Plus to Imagewriter I cable. TO DO WHAT YOU SPECIFIED ABOVE REQUIRES
THE USE OF A NULL MODEM ADAPTER!

I beg to differ!  I am CURRENTLY using a MacPlus/SE/II -> Imagewriter I cable
as the cable between my Mac II and my Hayes V-Series modem - so I can vouch
for it working. It won't do hardware handshake (;-), but it is a standard
modem cable!!

I also know that back in the old days of the Mac, you could also use your IWI
cables for modem cables then to, and since the change in the serial ports was
not great enough to cause problems (provided you had the ->9 converter) you
could still use the same cable to that as well.

I can produce pinouts...

This is only partially correct. The Mac Plus to hayes modem
modem cable should _not_ be a null modem. If you are connecting
DTE to DCE (mac to modem) the cable is straight through. If you
connect DTE to DTE (mac to imagewriter) then you need a null modem.
So you do need a null modem for the imagewriter, this is not the
same as the mac to hayes cable.

The Mac+ has the same kind of problem. There is a short 8" cable adaptor
that has the old connector on one end and a 9 pin DIN connector on the
other end. Apple sells these for $20. Other companies make these for
$10 (?).

I bought one such cable from M.A.C. in northern California. Once
I received it, the peripheral I was using with it would not work.
I ended up taking it apart and switching three wires around, using
IM IV as a ref. After my little modification, it worked fine.

I called M.A.C. up and told them my story. The voice on the phone
said something like, "Oh yah, the guy who built your cable was new."

So, where is my discount?
