[comp.sys.mac] new user blues...

dfickes@bucsb.UUCP (David Fickes) (06/16/89)

You folks are going to LOVE this one... After years of Un*x
snobbery (Sun/OS!) I finally had to break down and buy a
MAC II/cx for our art department because it seems to be standard
for the type of publications we are creating. I also may be
buying a MAC II from someone off the net. Since I'm a new user
I thought I'd coredump a few questions that I have.

1. Any recommendations on Software? I went ahead and bought MacWrite II
MacProject II and QuarkExpres but is there any other "standard"
software or "really good" software out there that is a "MUST" or
if you just can't live without a certain product.. let me know.

2. I'd like to network this into our Sun network for printing, ftp
disk sharing and the like. Any suggestions?

3. We need more memory.. (we've got 1 MB and will upgrade to 8MB) any
	experiences you'd like to share?

4. Standard question: Any PD stuff I should pick up and location of archives.

5. The Suns have modems already and on order. Should I just avoid the "pain"
and buy one for the MAC or can I just load the binaries onto
the Sun and then transfer them over to the MAC or should I try
to use the modems over the network from the MAC.

6. User group addresses/phone numbers? Either local or even cross-country
such as the Berkeley group I've heard about.

7. I might as well throw this one in... my cousins are going to visit
	next week.. they are 7 - 14, what games/games should I get
them since they'll want to play. (they already have a II/gs)

8. Big question: (almost forgot) we currently have a Radius 1 pg
monochrome and a Radius 2pg color has been suggested. I've
also heard of the Sigma monitors. We will be working with
magazine/color newsletter layout and I'm rather lost on this
one .f course I have discover that the monitor actually
	COSTS more than the system!

9. Maintainance for these systems? Either third party or Apple? We can't
afford to have any downtime (which is why we are considering the 2nd
	machine) Any suggestions?

AS you can tell I know relately NOTHING about these machines except
that I've avoided them for years :)... Now that I have one ... its time
to get educated. My many thanks for any help you might be able to
give.. if you can email it preferable since it is easier to read
but I'll also be checking for postings. I'll summarize to anyone who
wishes as well.

many thanks, david
