I am asking $2200 I assume you mean *EACH* ?! I believe such drives were recently purchased by a group of folks at BMUG for $750 each; what the hell are you trying to do here? It's bad enough seeing for-sales at good prices; it's utterly wrotten to see bandits looking for a fool !!! I'm outraged enough, I'm going to inquire to the systems administrator (postmaster@berkeley.edu) about their policy on "for-sale" articles ... -- --------------------------> please send REPLIES to <------------------------ INTERNET: uhrig@mcc.com (if unavailable: werner@rascal.ics.utexas.edu) UUCP: ...<well-connected-site>!milano!werner ALTERNATIVE: werner@astro.as.utexas.edu OR werner@utastro.UUCP

The $750 drives were only half the size (i.e. ~150 Meg) - though that was 2 months ago and in the meantime, CDC has sold their disk-manufacturing division to Seagate, I hear, so the prices for "leftovers" may have gotten even cheaper (maybe). Anyway, $2200 for the 300+meg drive is not quite as bad as I made you believe.... still, I'd expect you might be able to do better. CDC drives are, however, considered by many to be top quality. the volume in comp.sys.mac is getting to me; won't someone take the initiative and propose spinning off some more sub-groups that one can unsubscribe from (and stay semi-sane) ?! I don't think USEnet should became a FOR-SALE and WANTED bulletin-board and bazaar, but I'd vote for comp.sys.mac.for-sale and ~.wanted just to be able to "discriminate". but those 2 groups would not really be enough to solve the volume problem. It would be preferable, actually, if one could think of sub-group names that one would want to subscribe to, and unsubscribe comp.sys.mac ... someone with energy (and a thick skin) out there to carry the flag? I'm not sure if the summer is a good or bad time to do that (I can see arguments for both positions) What I'd really wish for is a moderated for-sale/wanted group where the moderator would filter/discourage articles with a) incomplete description b) unreasonable prices or sales conditions c) items deserving only local/regional distribution. what a bag of worms, though ... -- --------------------------> please send REPLIES to <------------------------ INTERNET: uhrig@mcc.com (if unavailable: werner@rascal.ics.utexas.edu) UUCP: ...<well-connected-site>!milano!werner ALTERNATIVE: werner@astro.as.utexas.edu OR werner@utastro.UUCP

[Werner Uhrig wails (and not alone!) about the unwieldy number of posts here, and asks for suggestions of sub-group names] I agree wholeheartedly. It's very frustrating to be away from the computer for a couple of days, come back, and find "274 unread messages." Those of us who like to stay well-informed about Macintosh affairs are simply forced to sacrifice information, for lack of time to read it. As far as sub-groups, how about: comp.sys.mac.software (articles about programs, bugs, bombs, compatibility, "when will) (it be out" and "how do I do that" questions, etc.... ) comp.sys.mac.hardware (articles about hard disks, chips, internal drives, AppleTalk ) (hookups, twitching displays, etc... ) comp.sys.mac.general (everything else, including griping about Apple's policies, ) (stuff for sale, viruses, marketing issues, etc... ) I don't really think there's enough stuff "for sale" on comp.sys.mac to warrant a separate newsgroup, though. --- Yours for less included text, Ron Morgan osmigo@emx.utexas.edu ---
