I was thinking of buying Word 4.0 to write my dissertation with. I
decided on Word mainly for speed/memory concerns (ruling out
FullWrite), and hierarchical Styles (ruling out almost everything
else).
But then I read that Word *still* doesn't store font descriptions
correctly. This is a big negative for me, since I was planning on
writing the dissertation on my Plus at home, and printing from a SE or
II at work. Font numberings on the different machines are likely to be
different, which (I understand) will make printing more difficult (e.g.
forcing me to redo Style sheets for printing).
Is this the case?
If so, I have a suggestion for somebody (perhaps Microsoft Itself) to
write a little DA or utility. This utility would do two types of
operations:
[1] Put an extra resource in selected Word documents describing
the current mapping between font numbers and names. (Would this
trigger anti-viral INITs?)
[2] If the mapping stored in a selected Word document is different
than the current environment, then convert the document so that
font references are correct for the current environment. (Is
the file format for Word 4.0 published?)
So get moving. I'll probably start writing in the Fall. :-)

Yeah, this is the case. Not just Word, but Microsoft-wide. They have decided that they are going, once again, to do it THEIR way, not Apple's, not the customers', or anybody else's way. I am slowly disconnecting my personal operation from all Microsoft applications. It is amusing to note that if you install the newly-renumbered fonts from Adobe, then Word's formula (equation) feature breaks. This is because they are looking for a hard-numbered Symbol font. Dolts. Your suggestion would work, but it would be a whole lot simpler if Microsoft gave a rip and just did it right. -- -Brian Diehm Tektronix, Inc. (503) 627-3437 briand@tekig4.LEN.TEK.COM P.O.
