ORIGINAL POSTING: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ COMMUNICATION SOFTWARE ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I'm a current user of Red Ryder 10.3 and thinking about changing to Versa Term Pro or MicroPhone II. My only complaint about RR is that it does not work flawlessly under multifinder which is somewhat of a pain. I mainly use RR to communicate with a Pyramid Super mini using vt100 mode. Any suggestions? Since almost everyone reading this group is using some type of communication software I think this would interest all. So you can email me directly or post directly to this group. I will summarize if enough people are interested. Ron Bannon bannon@andromeda.rutgers.edu SUMMARY OF RESPONCES: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ############################################################################ From: masticol@paul.rutgers.edu (Steve Masticola) I'm using VersaTerm 3.0, and have been pretty happy with it so far. It has two things I need: Kermit support (also Xmodem), and the ability to remember several phone numbers. One thing I'm unhappy about is that hangup doesn't always work reliably with my Practical Peripherals PM2400SA modem, but perhaps they've got that fixed now. I've patched around it by defining a hangup macro that seems to work well. - Steve ############################################################################ From: siegman@sierra.stanford.edu (Anthony E. Siegman) I vote for MicroPhone. Version I was solid and absolutely bug-free from day one. Version II adds neat features and is equally solid. I've written them notes twice about minor problems or suggestions -- both times I got a personal phone call back within 3 days. Haven't tried others (except macTerminal early on) but I use MicroPhone extensively and in a wide variety of ways, and it's great. --Tony Siegman, Stanford University ############################################################################ From: mliverig@verity.com (Mike Liveright x7627) 1) I used and liked Versaterm. Its emulation of the VT-100, and if needed Tectronix was great. In addition the author realy thought about lots of little tricks that made it convieient to use. 2) I am currently using TCP/Connect, the commertial version of NCSA TelNet and if you have an AppleTalk --> EtherNet then this is the one that I advise It allows multiple sessions and other great things and the NCSA version is free over the net so that yopu might as well try it. Some comments: 1) I forgot, the central CPU must support TCP and TELNET for the second option to be used. 2) There are still some user features in Versaterm that I countinue to wish I had, but the multiple terminal over apple talk is too good for me to continue with versaterm now. 3) NOTE... There is a real old versaterm on various BBS's. The current verson is soo much better that it is a CRIME that the older version is still around and the anyone gets their impressions about the program from a very obsolete version. I hope this is of help ############################################################################ From: Chris Cleeland <cleeland@rex.cs.tulane.edu> Well, here's my 2 cents: 1. If you do any type of downloading, try ftping Zterm 0.8 from the sumex archives. It works very nicely, is cheap ($30 shareware), and is quite multifinder friendly. I haven't sent my fee in, b/c I haven't been able to use it on my 512KE too effectively until just yesterday. I'm using it right now, and it's great. It's one drawback: NO SCRIPTING YET! 2. I also have extensive experience with Microphone II at a previous place of employment. I never had any problems with it working under multifinder, and the scripting language is just that -- almost a full-blown language, complete with functions (about 30 or so). It's a well-thought-out and extremely well-done program. I never looked at the docs, so I can't tell you what they were like. 3. A friend of mine at school gave me a copy of Versaterm Pro to play with, b/c I was thinking of possibly buying it if it worked well. Personally, I think that it is overrated, and it's living on a tradition. Granted, I didn't have the docs, but it was hard to figure out what to do exactly, and it really didn't have the features that Micro II had -- and I was VERY used to those. My suggestion to you is to try renting MicroPhone II for a week and see how you like it. You can find rental places in the back of MacUser. In the meantime, I would download Zterm from sumex, and try it out also. Oh, one more thing -- Zterm will run in the background under multifinder, so you don't always have to wait for your file to download -- you can be productive! Good luck in your search. If I can be of any more assistance (said as if I'd already been of assistance), please don't hesitate to mail me. -- Thanks Chris Cleeland, Tulane University Disclaimer: I haven't said anything worth not claiming!!! ############################################################################ From: rterry@hpcupt1.HP.COM (Ray Terry) If you can wait a few more weeks, you'll be able to upgrade to RR 11.0. It DOES work well under MultiFinder... Believe me, it does... Ray ############################################################################ From: Peter J Gergely <gergely@cs.dal.ca> Having used both RR10.3 and Versaterm-Pro 2.2, and 3.0, I would suggest you consider the following points. VT Pro 3.0 has macros but they are limited in that there are no conditionals as in RR. The DEC VT terminal support is flawless in VTPro but I've had problems with RR. VTPro supports backgroud downloads under MF, but not so for uploads. I personally prefer VT-Pro eventhough it has limited phone book capability (only 8). If more information is required, please send me EMAIL to GERGELY@XX.DREA.DND.CA (formerly DREA-XX.ARPA). - Peter ############################################################################ From: bnrmtv!koverzin@ames.arc.nasa.gov (Raymond Koverzin) I use Microphone II all of the time and connected to an AMDAHL machine running UTS (UNIX). I would consider myself a mildly sophistcated user (use kermit file transfer, use button macros) and feel the package is very satisfactory. My only complaint is that when using the larger text screen mode (12 pitch??), not all of the text fits my mac II screen. I can, however, shift the screen left or right using the scroll bars. ############################################################################ ############################################################################
