[comp.sys.mac] More on Jasmine

>Doesn't Jasmine quote a 2 day repair/replacement warranty??

Even if they do, they're not paying attention to it.

It so happened one of my Jasmine's died this morning. Worked fine last
night, suddenly nada. Driveware sees it on the bus, but it isn't a Jasmine
device. HD SC Setup doesn't recognize it as a disk. Something went 'ping',
obviously (I checked it on another machine. No boot. Checked another disk on
the first machine. boots fine. It's the disk).

I called ComputerWare, where I bought it. No, it's not in warranty (bought
before they extended it to two years). Here's where it gets interesting.

We talked over the troubles and tried a few things and it was still dead. CW
suggested I try to ship it to Jasmine directly, because they've had major
problems getting Jasmine to repair things in a timely fashion. Jasmine, it
seems, won't ship parts. You have to send it to them for repair. The
CW folks have drives that have been in for repair more than two months.

I called Jasmine. You buy it from CW, you repair it through them. Short
call, but unproductive.

So my drive is in at CW, who will box it up and ship it to Jasmine. Every
day, they call up Jasmine and ask about the status of all the drives sent in
for repair. Occasionally they get an answer. Most of the time Jasmine
ignores them.

ComputerWare yesterday, I was told, set a new policy. They are now actively
recommending people away from jasmine. if you go in and *have* to buy a
Jasmine they will sell one to you, but they're going to try to convince you
to buy elsewhere. This is particularly distressing because ComputerWare was
the first vendor to sell Jasmine's other than mail-order and CW has been one
of their largest volume dealers. If they're being dumped on, imagine what's
happening everywhere else.

Me? Since I have *no* idea when I'll get my drive back, I'll have to make
other arrangements. When it does come back, I'll sell it off. And I can
guarantee you that my next drive won't be Jasmine. I've owned three of their
drives. One died at 13 months (fixed on warranty). One died at 16 months (in
the shop) and one is about 20 months old and solid as a rock. But for how
long? and if it does fail, will I be able to get it fixed?

(anyone wanna buy a 20 meg hard disk? sheesh).

It's sad to see Jasmine taking such a beating on the net. All I can say
is that they have been excellent in their dealings with me and that I
won't hesitate to recommend Jasmine the next time someone asks for
recommendations on hard drives. BTW, the reason my drive went in yesterday
was because of the controller, not the drive mechanism itself. Oh well...

I should point out (for people who haven't been around long) that I'm a
long-time fan of Jasmine. Two of my drives had three digit serial numbers
(the one that failed monday was #244 of the new Driveware style 20 meg).
They took good care of me as well the last time I needed help.

That's why I find all of this so depressing. Knowing what they used to be
capable of, seeing their lack of caring for me this time and hearing the
horror stories out of ComputerWare (and others) makes me sad. I've been a
strong fan of Jasmine -- but Jasmine has convinced me to take my business
elsewhere in the future by their actions.
