Hey folks, I am interested in purchasing a used (in a quasi-perfect state) Apple Scanner. If anyone has such a beast, please contact me ASAP. Thanks way in advance. Omar

Ross-Dove just auctioned off the assets of DEST, which made scanners. Admittedly, not Apple Scanners, but: I bought a PC Scan 1000 (list price $1795) for $200, brand new, no cables. This is an 8"x14" flatbed scanner, 4-bit (16 level) grayscale, up to 400 DPI. Fry's had the cables and SCSI terminator on the shelf: A. Mac+ (DB25) to SCSI (50 pin) $16 to $21 B. IBM Parallel Printer cable (DB25 to Centronics 36) $ 7 to $10 C. SCSI terminator M/F (didn't need dual gender, but...) $19 Some mysterious bidder bought all the software but no hardware. Fortunately I was able to connect with a few other people in my position and we found a source for the software. Extra bonus: when examining the inside of my interface box I found that it had the 825 OCR option installed - this is $995 list and converts the 1000 to a 1020 ($2395 list). A few other people also lucked out in this manner (about 40% of all model 1000 buyers). So I have: Item DEST List 5/1/88 I paid ---------- --------- --------- PC Scan 1000 $1795 $214 OCR option $ 995 free (surprise!) Mac cable (A) $ 95 $ 21 Scanner cable (B) included $ 10 Terminator (C) included? $ 20 Mac Publish Pac $ 695 $ 30 Maintenance Manual ? free (in trash) User's Guide ? free (w/ maint. man.) Operations Manual ? free (in trash) Forms Overlay (plastic) ? free (in trash) 100 sales brochures $ 20 free (in trash) --------- --------- Total $3600 $280 Can you say "good deal"? Remember, *everything* is brand-spanking-new. Of course, support is problematic, and I'm already out of warranty. :-) Nice to have a maintenance manual. (P.S. If anyone else out there got one of these, I picked up some spare manuals ...) Can't wait for tonight to check it all out. The sales brochures will prove useful if I want to sell the system later. Many of the cheaper PC Scan Plus, and sheet-feed PC Scan 2000 (and 2020) were also sold, as well as a few "onesies and twosies" of various competing products that they must have had in for analysis. Scan-o-mania! Final note: even though a lot of Macs and PCs were also sold, they were not nearly so cheap. Worst buys of the day: 4 *broken* Macs for $3700, and a Sun 386i/250 for $13000 (when several others were sold at $5000 to $8000), and a scanner much like mine for $900. Some people bid more than street price! Pretty weird, but it means it's very hard to get a PC or Mac bargain at one of these auctions. Howard A. Landman landman@sun.com

Are all bankruptcy auctions as weird as the DEST one was? I mean, why would someone pay $900 for a Mac+ that is not even known to work? And some of the test equipment! $170 for an old digital multimeter! Geez! Tim Smith
