[comp.sys.mac] Hard Drive Partitions/Passwords

jkeegan@hawk.ulowell.edu (Jeff Keegan) (07/13/89)

I never really thought I'd have to worry about partitioning a hard drive on
the Mac.. "Self..", I thought, "..you have 20 megs.. That will fill up in a
minute. Besides, you don't need partitions."

Well, now I've found myself in a position where I have a hard drive that
I DO want to partition (because
				a) It's 80 megs
				b) It's not my mac, and the hard drive is
used by a lot of people. There is now a
need for security (due to abusive
				   measures by certain unnamed individuals).

It is for this reason that I am now in need of a program to partition the
hard drive, WITH password protection (if this is possible). I know that I've
seen programs in the past that partition drives, but I never paid them much
attention. Is it possible with just any drive? The drive I'm using is an
80 meg quantum drive that came with the mac (internal). Is there any public
domain or shareware software to do this? (With a password, preferably).
Is there any good commercial software for a relatively low price?

I know that the Jasmine drive on another Mac has a password partitioning
progam.. Will it work on a non-Jasmine drive? Is that legal? Will Jasmine
sell copies of the software?

What's the fastest animal on earth? Why are tomatoes in Sun Foods $5.34
each? And just who is this guy driving my car?

Thanks..

Here's a chance to help with your question about partitioning and to
give an opinion as well.

A company called La Cie (grab a MacWorld magazine for addresses and
phone numbers) sells disk drives, and they come with an amazing amount
of good stuff. I just bought a 40 meg drive, and it came with
software to do the sort of partitioning and (sigh) passwording that
youu referred to. I believe the program is called "SilverLining", and
I believe it will work with a Quantum 80.

They also include a program to share disks over the appletalk network,
and a backup program. I recommend you call them and see what they
say. They seemed like real nice folks; course the air is probably
clean and the stress level lower than where I am...

But just out of curiosity (I don't own LaCie stock or anything), are
these people really as good as they seem? I mean, I don't plan to
partition the disk, and the Cordura carrying case for the disk is very
nice, and I swear this has got to be the quietest drive I have ever
heard! A little more expensive, but could these people really be into
QUALITY? I may have to rethink my whole theory about AmErIcaN
IndUstrY.

Anyway, "One person's OpInIoN" <- (Note StUdLy CaPitiLizAtiOn).
