Also, in that same print dialog (i.e. DITL ID = -8191) of the
LaserWriter (I use version 5.2), there is a check box (item #22) that
says "Disk File". However, it is very cleverly hidden (at the
origin).

OK, I give up. How do I get the disk file checkbox to appear? It doesn't show
up in Resedit in the dialog box, and although I can find the text 'disk file'
when I do "open general" in ResEdit, I have no idea what I need to change in that
format to make it visible.

In answer to how to actually <get> the "Disk File" Dialog Item to show
up in the LaserWriter 5.2 dialog box:

1. Open up DITL #-8191
2. Choose "Select Item Number" from the DITL menu which now appears
3. Enter "22" in the box and press return
4. Choose "Open as Dialog Item" from the File menu
You should now see a window listing information on the "Disk File"
item. Notice the location coordinates are all set at zero.
5. Enter 72,327,90,404 for top, left, bottom, right and close the window.
The "Disk File" item should now appear in your DITL window.
6. Move the "Disk File" item and resize it to how you'd like it
(My numbers above just represent where I ended up putting it).
7. Close up your windows and say "Yes" to "Save Changes?"

This should work. When you print with this item checked you should now
get numbered Postscript files (i.e. Postscript0, Postscript1, etc)
appearing in your System Folder.

Hope this helps,

This little feature has one very nice characteristic: it works even if
background printing is enabled. If you turn on the "Disk file" option
from within the Print dialog box, the LaserWriter driver will spool your
QuickDraw picture, and the PrintMonitor will wake up and write the
PostScript file as a background operation.

The classic trick for generating a PostScript disk file (holding down F
or K after clicking OK) does _not_ work if background printing is enabled.

When editing the dialog, select the resource by number (via the menu), and
then Get Info. You'll get the resource info box that lists the position at
0,0 0,0. Change those 0s to something that will be large enough to click
in; at this point you can click in, and therefore resize & drag the
resource. Move it where you want it, and resize it large enough so it shows
up completely.

Has the obvious been asked yet?

Why is it hidden? Is this a prize for learning how to use Resedit? Or does
Apple just like to see 100's of people sitting there pressing F or K fast and
furiously after hitting OK. Or will the results of checking the box change
over time, leaving me with an erased hard disk, or perhaps an x-rated
postscript file...

Any answers?
