Have anyone ever used the HP's DeskWriter Printer for the Macintosh? How does it compared to the Apple's LaserWriter? Thanks -Sherry Yang yang@hpcvlx.hp.com

I haven't seen the DeskWriter yet, but the HP DeskJet (same print mechanism as the DeskWriter) output really does come close to that of the Cannon print engines used by both the Apple and HP laser printers, even when using plain old copier paper. However, the DeskJet output can smear a bit (especially if it gets wet) and suffers from a little overspray that seems more noticable than stray toner from a laser printer. Also, the DeskJet ink is not as dark in filled areas as from a laser printer. Still, until the next generation of cheap, 4 page/minute laser printers come out (maybe this year?), the DeskWriter/Jet seems to me a pretty good deal. They are better quality than the best 24-pin impact printers, much quieter, and not a lot more money. Can anyone comment on the relative supplies cost per page (paper/ribbon/ink/toner) between a 24-pin, DeskWriter/Jet and laser? Seems like the print driver software and fonts HP developed for the DeskWriter would let them crank out a cheap quickdraw-based laser printer too. Any rumours on when we'll see this? Finally, I've heard rumours that Apple has a couple new printers waiting in the wings - something between the ImageWriter II and LQ, and a cheaper laser. Anyone heard any details? -Jon -- ----- Jon L Spear: jspear@gryphon.COM <routing site>!gryphon!jspear gryphon!jspear@elroy.jpl.nasa.gov "With computers we can make billions of mistakes every second!"
