[comp.sys.mac] Diamond 3.2

isle@eleazar.dartmouth.edu (Ken Hancock) (07/13/89)

A new archiving program was just posted to info-mac archives
the other day and I downloaded and played with it a bit
this evening... Now I have a couple questions.

It was stated that this is a full-featured demo, just
with a 1-month expiration date. What I'd like to know
is if the demo has the same user-interface as the
commercial release because:
1> It's got the worst user interface I've ever seen.
(We're talking UGLY -- time for the brown-paper bag!)
2> The About dialog is COMPLETELY illegible. Lines of
text overlapping all over the place. (I assume
      someone forgot to call SetDAFont().)
3> Is there going to be a PD unpacker? Face it, it'll
never become a standard if everyone has to pay to
      unpack.

I'm sure I could think of some more questions, but that'll
do it for now...

Ken

DISCLAIMER? I don't get paid enough to worry about disclaimers.

I recently downloaded Diamond 3.2 and gave it a try. Well, it compressed
the entire 4 disks of Dreams from 2.8M down to 1.1M. Not bad, especially
when StuffIt produced a 1.5M archive. Diamond is slow, compressing, but
fast uncompressing. The user interface is simple and clear. So, the
DEMO version runs out after a month, well, don't believe it. I may be
wrong but I find that it should die in about a week. And this includes
self-unpacking archives that you made with it. Further, a self-unpacking
archive will refuse to pack for you (which is ok) it claims that the
packing code is missing. Well, it isn't. Actually it is just disabled.
How do I know this? Well, the difference in size between a non-self-unpacking
and a self-unpacking archive is exactely the size of the Diamond program
itself. :-) In summary: Diamond seems to be a very nice product,
functionally superb (compared to anything else on the market today), simple
to use. I am curious to know what the cost of the real product is!?
Hint: if you are stymied by the Help screen, try clicking on the two icon's
at the bootom of the dialog, the ones with "up" and "down" arrows.

            125 $
        Site licenses available.
        Unpacking only licenses:
Not a freeware, but a very low price:
                up to 1000 units: 1.40 $
                1000 - 5000 units: 0.70 $
                more: 0.35 $
Note that unpacking-only versions are available
        in 2 different ways:
            % stand-alone unpacking-only version
            % since version 3.0, there is a built-in option:
