Yesterday, I installed an Ethernet card and the corresponding EtherTalk software on my Mac IIcx in the hopes that it would increase my TOPS access speed. I noticed no improvement over AppleTalk while using TOPS, but did notice a difference using Su-Mac for FTPs (27000 bytes/sec for EtherTalk and 4000 bytes/sec for AppleTalk). What I am doing is putting a FoxBASE database on a TOPS volume that exists in my home directory on one of our Sun4's and opening it up using FoxBASE on my machine. It takes basically the same amount of time for AppleTalk and EtherTalk (this shouldn't be true). Does anyone know is TOPS is limited to AppleTalk speeds internally? I noticed that Telnet is limited to AppleTalk speeds for FTP, because it transfers at the same rate, while Su-Mac was flying under EtherTalk. Also, if anyone knows of a way to increase the speed between a Sun and a Mac, please let me know. (for instance, what happens with FlashTalk when one end is connected to a Mac and the other end is a Sun?) Help, I need more speed! Andrew W.
