[net.music] Lumberjack Song

markp@azure.UUCP (Mark Paulin) (12/02/83)

This is from memory, thus is probably not verbatim of the lyrics...

Now -- it's -- time -- for... Monty Python's Flying Circus!

I never wanted to be an architect -- I wanted to be a lumberjack!
Leaping from tree to tree, with my best girl by my side, we'd sing, sing, sing:

I'm a lumberjack and I'm okay.
I sleep all night and I work all day.

	He's a lumberjack and he's okay.
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

I cut down trees, I eat my lunch, I go to the lava-tree. (lavatory)
On Wednesdays I go shopping, and have buttered scones for tea.

He cuts down trees, he eats his lunch, he goes to the lava-tree.
On Wednesdays he goes shopping, and has buttered scones for tea.

	He's a lumberjack and he's okay.
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

I cut down trees, I skip and jump, I like to press wild-flowers.
I put on women's clothing, and hang around in bars.

He cuts down trees, he skips and jumps, he likes to press wild-flowers.
He puts on women's clothing, and hangs around in bars!?

	He's a lumberjack and he's okay.
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

I cut down trees, I wear high heels, suspenders and a bra.
I wish I'd been a girlie, just like my dear ma-ma!

Oh, John -- I thought you were so *rugged*!

Just wanted to add that I think Mark Paulin's job at the lyrics
to the Lumberjack song are quite accurate. Except I think the
last line is not `just like my dear ma-ma', but is `just like
my dear pa-pa', which makes it even funnier.

I know Monte Python writes its own stuff, but who are the REAL
writers?? I mean, do some write most of the songs and skits, or
does almost everyone participate. I like the Henry Kissinger song.
Who thought that one up?

I know the requestor asked that this be mailed to him (I did that already),
but I have a further question about this song.
------
Man (soon to be a lumberjack---RATS, I GAVE IT AWAY!!!) [SPOKEN]
I never wanted to be a (YOUR LEAST FAVORITE PROFESSION HERE).
I always wanted to be... A LUMBERJACK!!!
[MUSIC STARTS IN MARCH TIME]
Yes, a lumberjack!! The smell of the forest!! The redwood!! The scots
pine!! The larch!! (BASICALLY, JUST NAME A LOT OF TREES HERE)
(MAN TAKES OFF CURRENT OUTER CLOTHING TO REVEAL LUMBERJACK SHIRT UNDERNEATH)
With my best girl by my side, [ENTER GIRL STAGE LEFT]
we'd sing. Sing. Sing.

Lumberjack:
Oh, I'm a lumberjack and I'm OK, I sleep all night and I work all day

CHORUS: (Sung by Mounties)
He's a lumberjack and he's OK, he sleeps all night and he works all day

Lumberjack:
I cut down trees, I eat my lunch, I go to the lavat'ry (= lavatory)
On Wednesdays I go shopping, and have buttered scones for tea

Mounties:
He cuts down trees, he eats his lunch, he goes to the lavat'ry
On Wednesdays he goes shopping, and has buttered scones for tea

CHORUS

Lumberjack:
I cut down trees, I skip and jump, I like to press wild flowers
I put on women's clothing, and hang around in bars

Mounties:
He cuts down trees, he skips and jumps, he likes to press wild flowers
He puts on women's clothing, and hangs around in bars (???????)

[Confused Mounties regroup quickly for CHORUS]

Lumberjack:
I cut down trees, I wear high heels, suspendies and a bra (-r)
[ "-r" implies suffix supplied by regional accent]
I wish I'd been a girlie, just like my dear mama (-r)
(in later versions: papa (-r) )

Mounties:
He cuts down trees, he wears high heels
Suspendies and a bra?????????? What kind of a...
(Mounties descend into chaos and leave. The lumberjack either finishes
the song himself OR a quick flurry of piano chords causes the Mounties
to regroup and sing the CHORUS, but only up to the second "OK". In the first
case, Girl then says: "And I always thought you were so rugged!" and walks
off crying.)
-------
I hope that summed it up. My question is this: we all know (well, at
least most of us know (well, some of us know)) that this gem
is a product of Monty Python. But who knows who actually wrote the song???
This is not a trivia test. I sure don't know. Please mail answers.
Could someone also mail me the words to "Always Look on the Bright Side of
Life"? Thanx in advance.

The writer of "The Lumberjack Song", as well as most (if not all)
of the Monty Python songs was Neil Innes, former member of The
Bonzo Dog Band.

For Steve Silverberg at Teklabs:
I think that the'Lumberjack Song' is done by Monty Python.
It should be on one of their older albums.

There are actually two versions, one which ends with "mama" and
one with "papa". The Television version used "mama", while the
record album version used "papa".

I know, who cares anyway?

Actually, it was

...I never wanted to be a BARBER. I wanted to be a lumberjack.

The lumberjack song was preceded by the barber sketch. ("I'm all finished
cutting...CUTTING...CUTTING your hair. It's all done.")

What does any of this have to do with music?

I would like to express my deepest gratitude for all who gave me the words
to the lumberjack song. I really didn't know that it was from Monty Python.
The response was overwhelming, hence my posting of this. Thank you all.

OK, Neil Innes. Everyone seems to think he wrote the Lubmerjack Song and the
rest of the Python musical repertoire. But I don't remember his ever appearing
with Python prior to Holy Grail/City Center concerts. He wasn't in the actual
TV series, and he didn't appear (to my knowledge) with the Fred Tomlinson
Singers who sang all the Python songs on TV. I don't believe he got any
writing credit on the TV show, either. With that in mind, does anyone know
definitively if Innes is the composer of Opera de la Jacques du Lumbeur.

(what's a lubmerjack???)

Actually the lumberjack song was used in several contexts. The one I
remember is in "And now for something completely different!". In this
case the Lumberjack song followed the parrot sketch.
