At someone's suggestion, I've looked at my MacEnvy file after downloading from sumex and debinhexing and unstuffing with StuffIt 1.5.1. It shows the following resources: BNDL ID = -4064 cdev "MacEnvy" ID = -4064 CNTL ID = -4045 (also 4046 4047 4048) DITL ID = -4064 envy ID = 0 FREF ID = -4064 ICN# (looks like an icon with screen and keyboard) ICON (shows six icons with one in a square) mach ID = -4064 ncrt ID = -4064 PICT (with a stylized font reading MacEnvy) vers ID = 1 When I double-click FREF it says File Type cdev, icon localID 0, and fileName (blank). I typed in MacEnvy as fileName. The Get Info box, however, shows MacEnvy with a generic document icon, Kind: says "document", though it knows that this is MacEnvy 1.0 by Ken McLeod. When I put this file in my system folder, it isn't treated like a cdev, i.e., it doesn't show up in my control panel. Anyone know what's wrong? Steve Goldfield P.S. I am using ResEdit Version 1.2b2 which came with some commercial software I own. Is that too old a version?

Gee, Steve, why didn't you mail me? :-) It sounds to me as though the file type of the MacEnvy file has been changed to something other than 'cdev'. This would produce the symptoms you describe. Using ResEdit, click on "MacEnvy" and then select "Get Info" from the File menu. The dialog that appears will have boxes for entering the Type and Creator; these should be 'cdev' and 'envy', respectively. If not, change them, and save the changes. You'll need to force a rebuild of the Control Panel's cdev list, by holding down Option and Command as you select "Control Panel" from the DA menu. You'll hear a beep, indicating that the rebuild is underway. When the Control Panel window appears, you should see MacEnvy's icon. (MacEnvy 2.0 has been more or less finished for about a month now; as soon as I get the documentation finished, it will be released. Sorry for the delay...) -k -- ========== ....... ============================================= Ken McLeod :. .: UUCP: ...{spsd,zardoz,felix}!dhw68k!thecloud ========== :::.. ..::: INTERNET: thecloud@dhw68k.cts.com //// =============================================

Now that I have done so, I did send Email about the anomaly of telling me I have a 68881 when I have a 68882 installed. Someone said you may be only checking a logical yes or no function which just says there is an FPU rather than actually querying the FPU to see what kind it is. Has your version 2.0 corrected that? #> It sounds to me as though the file type of the MacEnvy file has been #>changed to something other than 'cdev'. This would produce the symptoms The above is true. However, GateKeeper was the culprit. I had to turn it off (and upgrade to a newer version) before I could change the file type. With the old GateKeeper, even with ResEdit I couldn't change the file to a cdev. Steve Goldfield
