looking at the new version of the system software that i just got (6.0.3), the only improvement seems to lie with the way the laserwriter ii and the imagewriter lq are handled. i was told that there were various minor bug fixes made. does anyone have any specifics? alex Alex Ho University of California, Berkeley aho@cory.berkeley.edu ...ucbvax!cory!aho

According to the official "United States Macintosh System Software 6.0.3 Change History" released the day before Christmas by Apple: "The United States Macintosh System Software 6.0.2 is primarily a maintenance release and a bug fix for the Apple File Exchange. In addition it provides a hook to support 32 Bit Color QuickDraw, and fixes problems in the AppleTalk Manager and the Time Manager. This System file will be released to support a future Macintosh." -- In that no installer scripts were issued with 6.0.3, this should NOT be interpreted as a general release. It's for developers to make sure their software works with 32-bit ("clean") QuickDraw. This doesn't offer new functionality, it just offers compatibility with the new class of machines. "The installed base does not need to upgrade to System 6.0.3." - Steve Mann, System Software Evangelist; Cover Letter to Developers Hope this helps. -- +-------------------+-jackiw@cs.swarthmore.edu / !rutgers!bpa!swatsun!jackiw-+ | nicholas jackiw | jackiw%campus.swarthmore.edu@swarthmr.bitnet | +-------------------+-VGP/MathDept/Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, PA 19081--+ "Big tough man. System 6.0.3 is required for people with the Macintosh SE/30. It also has support for installing 32-bit Color Quickdraw, when it becomes available. (Some of the news stories have been a bit ambiguous about this; the code to implement 32-bit Color Quickdraw is not in 6.0.3.) There is also a change the Apple File Exchange program.

Hi. When I received my HD a few weeks ago it was pre-formatted and had system 6.0.3 installed. What is the difference between it and 6.0.2? Ron ron_b@apollo.com

What is the difference between it and 6.0.2? Not much. 6.0.3 came out to support the IIx and SEx (aka SE/30). The Apple File Exchange got some fixing, Responder changed, and the System file itself got some changes. Oh, there were hooks left in the System for 32-Bit QuickDraw. You want 6.0.3 if you: are running an SEx, or IIx, use Apple File Exchange, have a gripe with Responder that they might have fixed, want to use 32-Bit QuickDraw, or just have to have the latest stuff on your disk. If, on the other hand, you are happy with your Macintosh on 6.0.2, are getting work done, and don't want to mess with success, don't bother. In your case, you have 6.0.3 running, keep it. I'm > really not interested in spending another $40.00+ on an upgrade > right away. If, in fact, they actually stuck you with 6.0, it's definitely worth your while to upgrade to 6.0.2. You shouldn't have to spend any money for the upgrade. You should be able to take your system floppies (and maybe 1 or 2 extra, I don't remember) to your dealer and have them copy the new system onto them. The fee is only if you want doccumentation, which you really don't need, since it really didn't change much. 6.0.2 was a bug fix. 6.0 had a number of bugs, some of which were apparently unfriendly. You don't need 6.0.3, since it is exclusively for the 68030-based machines. (or is it just SE/30?-- anyway, not the plus). If they won't copy the new system for you, yell a lot, and if that doesn't work, check with a user-group or just find a friend who has 6.0.2 and copy his disks. You're entitled to the soft- ware free -- Apple said so. --Mike
