I am using Apple's Tape Backup unit to back up my SE/30's 40 meg drive. Even if my hard drive has 10 meg free, I still have to use a second tape. Are these tapes really 40 meg or is someone pulling my leg? -- Chris North chris@cayman.COM Cayman Systems 26 Landsdowne Street Cambridge MA 02139 617-494-1999

Hi, Chris! Long ago I read somewhere that Apple Tape Backup writes each record out 3 times, for some reason (to ensure a restore in case of tape failures?) But this is only a Genuine Net Rumor, and should be given only such credence as any other. I do know, however, that under Apple Tape Backup prior to version 2.0.1, I was unable to restore a "volume" backup to any other drive! My internal 80 died, and I could not restore the tape to any other internal 80 in our shop. I don't know if this has been fixed in the current release: has anyone had more recent experience? --Cy--

I had a similar problem with apple's tape backup program. I had a mass micro drive partitioned into 4 volumes. I did a volume backup. Then I reformatted the drives with SilverLining by LaCie, with the same sizes. Then I tried to restore the volumes but the backup software only recognized the system volume and refuse to backup up the other volumes. So I had to reinstall the mass micro drivers and partitioning software!! What a pain!! Just recently, I tried to backup another disk with SilverLining installed, and the tape backup software only recognized the system volume. I think I'm going to pitch apple's backup software if I can't find a fix soon. John Salmento Carnegie-Mellon University ziggy+@andrew.cmu.edu
