[comp.sys.mac] moving dos WP between MAC and dos disk in mac

18215MES@MSU.BITNET (07/27/89)

I am posting this for a friend of mine...
He has a 2x and needs to convert from Wordperfect on a dos diskette
to MAC Word (or WP) - and back again. He says that Apple FIle
Exchange removes his formating etc, and so we just need a way to
get the file from the MAC to the DOS diskette - a straight copy
similar to the way TOPS will copy between the two. (Why isn't there
a 'copy' button in AFE along with the 'translate' button?)
If apple would only release 6.0.4 with a fix so that the finder
would recognize the dos diskette...
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...

AFE doesn't remove formatting in the "default translation" ... what's
more likely to be happening is that he's not saving the document as a
WP/DOS document before the copy. The formats are not compatible, but
WP lets you write the Mac document out in DOS format. Then the copy
should work.

Why isn't there a 'copy' button in AFE along with the

Because Mac files are not like DOS files. They have two "forks" and a
"copy" function would simply not work. I believe "translate" simply
extracts the data fork.

We purchased MacLink Plus/PC so that we could transfer wp files between the
mac and a dos machine, and it works just fine. One of my colleagues
uses wordperfect on the dos machine and I use ms-word on the mac. Also,
the file translation filters can be used by AFE, although I've found the
performance and functionality of MacLink Plus/PC far superior to AFE.

MacLink Plus/PC comes with a comm (file transfer) package and a cable to
connect the mac to the dos machine. But since we have a II/cx, we just put the
ms-dos diskette in the II/cx, use AFE to move it to the mac, then translate
it with the MacLink Plus package. The only problem that we've run into is
the loss of font type/size definitions when moving the file from the mac to
the dos machine.

Umm... we haven't had problems with it.
