[comp.sys.mac] Tape Backup software...

mmccann@hubcap.clemson.edu (Mike McCann) (07/22/89)

I have an Apple Tape Backup system but Im not very happy with the
software that was included (slow and can't see AppleShare volumes). Is
there a piece of software out there that is better?? If so, what are
your recommendations?

Thanks,

I'm using two software packages with my tape drive: DiskFit and Retrospect.
If backups are what you're looking for, I think you'll find DiskFit very
good -- it can see AppleShare volumes, and it's fast -- I'd guess about 1.5
Megs a minute (I have a 68030 machine, though I doubt that makes that much
difference.) Retrospect is archiving software, and works just find with
tapes drives, too.

Both made by Dantz software (though DiskFit is marketed through SuperMac.)

                            Harriet."

FastBack II from Fifth Generation Systems is excellent backup software.
It is fast, can do 2 different degrees of data compression and works with
just about every tape drive on the market. If it won't work with a piece
of hardware you have, give Fifth Generation a call and they will try to
make it work. I have been using it now for several weeks and it seems to
be a very solid, well thought out piece of software. I recommend it
highly. Fifth Generation's sales info number is (800)225-2775.

I bought a used SuperMac DataStream that came with TapeFit. Is this the same
program as DiskFit? It's extremely slow (over 7 hours to back up 65Meg not
counting 45 minutes to format each tape) on my Mac IIcx. Most of the time
seems to be spent repositioning the tape.

Is that a file backup or a volume backup? File Bup's can take much longer
depending on the way the software is done. Yes, it is true that the 3M
mechanism is slow but it can certainly do better than 10meg/hour. I think
the apple software can do 1meg/minute on a volume Bup.

TapeFit was an earlier, seperate program that went out with the Dataframe
tape drive line. The current DiskFit is MUCH faster than this: it backs up
my 30 Megs of stuff in about 15 minutes. DiskFit comes with an INIT which
allows you to mount the tape (erasing the tape takes about 1 minute;
formating takes longer, but I haven't had to do it yet.), and DiskFit takes
it from there. It uses a cache file (I believe it's about 600K?) in some
way that makes the backup pretty speedy.

Jeff,

MINOR correction...ONLY the commercial version of DiskFit comes with the
ULDataStream INIT. The version for the DataStream tape drive, XP40+40, and/or
XP60+40 is available electronically (ftp access to RASCAL, SuperMac BBS,
APVENB DL 16 on CompuServe, SuperMac RT on GEnie, or the SuperMac forum on
CONNECT).
