[comp.sys.mac] What's with this MacIP, SUMacIP, ...?

tempest@wet.UUCP (Ken Lui) (08/02/89)

Ugh! There has been a very lively discussion concerning Telnet,
ftp, and so forth for the Macintosh. I've personally played with
NCSA Telnet 2.2.3 and have only heard of some of the others. For
instance, I was looking around on an anonymous ftp server and saw
MacIP. "OK," I thought, "I'll just download it and check it out.
It's only 300K...er, wait, it's 3 Megabytes... better wait a
little longer." Now, there's discussion about a Telnet from BYU
that lets you do ftp without resorting to MacIP. "So, that's
what MacIP is..." All these programs that lets a Mac talk with
"the net" have gotten me interested; but I'm not sure what they
have in common and what makes one better than another. I'm not
even sure if there are a other programs such as those mentioned
above int the Keywords: line.

If anybody can give a brief overview of all these networking
packages for the Macintosh *and* where they can be found, I would
appreciate it very very much.

Give me e-mail, and for those out in net-land who are in the same
situation as I, I'll summarize all mail I receive.

Thanks,
Ken
