APPLE ADDS FDHD SUPERDRIVE AND LOWERS PRICE FOR ALL MACINTOSH SE CONFIGURATIONS CUPERTINO, California--August 1, 1989--Apple Computer, Inc. today announced that it will incorporate the Apple FDHD SuperDrive into all Macintosh SE computers, and will reduce the suggested retail price of all Macintosh SE 68000-based configurations by $300 in the U.S, effective immediately. The enhancement will support customers demanding high capacity floppy disk storage and will make it easier for customers to exchange information between a variety of operating environments. The lower price reflects Apple's ongoing effort to offer Macintosh technology to broader customer segments. With this announcement, the Macintosh SE joins the Macintosh SE/30 and the Macintosh II family in utilizing FDHD (Floppy Disk High Density) SuperDrive technology. The FDHD SuperDrive enables users to store up to 1.4 megabytes of information on floppy disksQnearly twice the storage of previously used 800k disks. The FDHD SuperDrive also reads 800k and 400k floppy disks, ensuring compatibility with other Macintosh systems. In addition, FDHD SuperDrive enables users to exchange data files between Macintosh and Apple II, MS-DOS, and OS/2 based systems. "The Macintosh SE is one of the most successful personal computers ever offered. In fact, according to a recent industry study, it is the most successful personal computer ever sold through retail channels," said Randy Battat, Apple vice president of product marketing. "With SuperDrive as a standard feature, all Macintosh SE users will be able to more easily access and manage information in multi-vendor environments as well as take advantage of greater floppy disk storage. The combination of this additional functionality and lower price will improve the Macintosh SE's price/performance value for customers needing solid productivity, graphics and connectivity applications coupled with internal expansion capabilities." The Macintosh SE with FDHD SuperDrive is currently available through authorized Apple dealers at a suggested retail price of $2,869 for the 1 megabyte Macintosh SE with two FDHD SuperDrives; $3,469 for the 1 megabyte Macintosh SE with 20 megabyte internal hard disk; and $4,069 for the 2 megabyte Macintosh SE with 40 megabyte internal hard disk. The new prices reflect a $300 reduction in suggested retail price on all U.S. configurations. Apple also plans to offer an upgrade kit to current Macintosh SE owners which includes the internal FDHD SuperDrive, current system software release and the necessary logic board components. It will be available this fall through authorized Apple dealers. -30- Apple, the Apple logo and Macintosh are registered trademarks of Apple Computer, Inc.
