It is possible to connect a LaserWriter directly to a Mac using a round 8 pin to round 8 pin cable, thereby avoiding the extra cost of two LocalTalk transceivers. Of course, one cannot do networking this way, but for a "private" printer it seems to work. Is there any loss in speed connecting the printer this way? What are the baud rates for this method as compared to connecting the Mac and printer over LocalTalk? Will printing very large bitmaps be noticably slower using a direct cable? Am I completely off-base with these questions?
