I've just started designing an interactive windowing interface to a (CAD-directed inspection) programming system and would appreciate pointers to information about relevant design decisions and implementation techniques. In particular I'd like help with a decision about tiled vs overlapping windows, and information about the algorithms involved in either technique. I'm fairly certain I'll use tiled base-level windows and employ some overlapping pop-ups and subordinate (e.g. query) windows above them. Since I'll be working with workstations and graphics terminals that will take care of the graphics segmentation for me I don't need info about graphics techniques. Instead I'm interested in suitable logic for configuring and determining selections of tiled and overlapped windows. Please reply by mail, and if it's warranted I'll post a synopsis to net.cog-eng. Thanks in advance for any information!
