[comp.sys.mac] External monitors for an SE

riddle@mathcs.emory.edu (Larry Riddle) (08/06/89)

The student newspaper at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA would
like to begin using "desktop publishing" to help produce their paper
before it is sent outside for final printing. They are looking at two
systems: (1) a Macintosh system and (2) a Zenith PC clone running
Windows. I am trying to push the Mac system, but price is a major
factor in their decision. In order to lower the total cost, I was going
to suggest they get an SE. The problem is that the SE has only one slot
and the editor would like both a two-page monitor and Apple's
PC drive since they will need to transfer articles written on PC's to
the Mac to put into Word or PageMaker. The new SE's will come with the
superdrives, but they still want the capability of reading 5.25 disks.

I would welcome any comments from anyone with experience hooking
multiple devices to an SE all of which require their own cards. I know
that some video cards provide an additional slot. Which of these might
work with the external PC drive?

The only other alternative would be to go to a Mac IIcx. While I
realize that in the long run this would probably be better, the extra
cost now might swing the entire decision to the Zenith system.

Thanks.

How about modifying one of their PCs with, say, a Central Point card. They
can then use 400k OR 800k Mac drives on the PC, transfer files to the
PC-connected drive, and read them directly on the mac. These cards typically
go for around $150, I think; check Infoworld or one of the PC rags.
