I recently purchased a 2400 baud modem through the mail for $129 plus $20 for a cable (they now sell for $119-and one place includes the cable!). The price seemed to good to be true, and I wanted to upgrade my old Apple 1200 baud modem . The problem is that this modem seems to hang up, or loose the carrier somehow. As far as I can tell, there is no rhyme or reason to it's madness. It can drop me 3 or 45 minutes into a session, or not drop me at all. Other modems at work do not do this, and the old Apple modem I had did not do this. I had been told by the mail order firm that this modem did not work with Versaterm, then after I told them that I had tested it with both Versaterm and Macterminal, at work and at home, they changed their mind and said that it didn't work with Smartcom! I have sent the modem back and received a replacement, but this one seems to do the same thing. Does anyone have any idea as to what would cause this problem? Could it be the circuitry or logic in the modem is not sophisticated enough or that the parts are of lower quality (hence the lower price)? Many Thanks, Mark Sartor, 221 Ag Hall, MSU , E.
