If anyone responds to the earlier request for info on the tape drive advertized in APDA-LOG, could they please also specify whether the drive is compatible w/ other systems? When A/UX eventually comes out, I'd like to transfer a fair amount of software (like GNU CC and SB-Prolog) from our Suns to the Mac. If the Mac and Sun cartridge tape drives were the same format, it would make it a LOT easier. - mike -- newton@csvax.caltech.edu {ucbvax!cithep,amdahl}!cit-vax!newton Caltech 256-80 818-356-6771 (afternoons, nights) Pasadena CA 91125 Beach Bums Anonymous, Pasadena President I'm never biased...

This is posted for a colleague. You can respond here, to me, or to the person (s_bertsche-rd@udplato.bitnet) directly. Thanks. I am trying to select a tape backup unit for the Macintosh. I need the unti to: 1. Backup a 150M AppleShare server volume 2. Work with FastBack II software 3. Have reliable operation 4. Cost under $2000 (educational price) Suggestions (backed with experience) appreciated. -- Dave Anderer Academic Computing and Instructional Technology University of Delaware

Cost under $2000 (educational price) the TEAC is sold by several companies which add a box and power- supply and some software for under $1k. you can also buy the mechanism for under $500 and stick it into a box yourself. There are several backup programs that work with the drive, FastBack, Retrospect, something from Nuvolabs and, probably, Redux. From my experiments, I'd prefer Retrospect over Fastback. -- --------------------------> please send REPLIES to <------------------------ INTERNET: werner@rascal.ics.utexas.edu UUCP: ...<well-connected-site>!rascal.ics.utexas.edu!werner ALTERNATIVE: werner@astro.as.utexas.edu OR werner@utastro.UUCP

I have been using the new Archive 150 meg tape backup unit for several months. It has a list price of $2195 and backups at a rate of 5 to 6 megabytes per minute on my Mac II & IIx. It comes with it's own software or can be used with the very powerful archive program from Dantz software called "Retrospect". I have been using an Archive drive on my HP Vectra CPU running Xenix for the last year. It has behaved flawlessly in that time. I expect the same from their Mac unit. Mel Shear
