I am looking for a backup program that only backups datafiles, not applications, or alternatively just backups certain predefined folders. The programs I have looked at forces me to backup all files the first time (=30 meg). With such an intelligent program I could easily backup to floppy disks, especially since I have a MacIIx.

DiskFit allows you to exclude applications and system files from a Backup. Retrospect would be another possibility, since you can build custom selection criteria to back up exactly what you want and avoid the rest. Redux also (I believe, I've never used it) allows that. One nice thing about Retrospect is that you can define a backup script that it will fire up and run automatically for you unattended (assuming the backup media doesn't require your attention). Plug in a tape, go to bed and it'll run, back up the system and shut it off for you.
