We have a network of Macs here (50+). The main lab has 20 SEs with two 800K floppies. When System 7.0 comes out, I understand that unless we upgrade to 2.0 mb of memory, we can forget about using System 7.0. Hopefully, by that time memory won't be that expensive. The other problem I see is the amount of disk space System 7.0 will require. Even now, running 6.0.3 gives us very little room to set up a boot disk and provide a reasonable set of fonts, DAs, inits, cdevs, and so on. With 7.0, I would think it will be impossible. Now with memory, I can see it going down in price enough to convince the boss to spend $$$ on upgrading all the Macs to 2.5 mb. But if we have to also upgrade to 1.44 mb disk drives, that could become very expensive, especially if there isn't an "upgrade" per se planned (i.e. we have to buy new and through away 20 good 800K drives). So I guess my question is does Apple plan to have a trade in offer for the 800K floppies for the 1.44 mb floppies. The other question is will 1.44 mb even be enough? I noticed that Mac SE are now shipping with 1.44 mb drives so that sort of answers my second question. However, Mac Pluses still ship with the 800K drives, so does that mean Mac Plus users have to stay with 6.0.3? That would be unfortunate. Apple Canada has just announced new prices. The Mac Plus has gone down $400 to $1150Cdn. The SE is about the same except it now has the 1.44 mb drive. -- Peter Steele, Microcomputer Applications Analyst Acadia University, Wolfville, NS, Canada B0P1X0 (902)542-2201x121 UUCP: {uunet|watmath|utai|garfield}!dalcs!aucs!Peter BITNET: Peter@Acadia Internet: Peter%Acadia.BITNET@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU
