Hello out there in netland, We are writing applications for the IBM PC/XT in several languages. At this time we are looking for a migration path to a multitasking environment. Digital Research's Concurrent DOS comes to mind, but I think that there may be some compatibility problems running ordinary PCDOS programs under Concurrent. So now for the $64K question: Can anyone recommend (and I know that someone will) a multitasking environment that is compatible with PCDOS. (And if you know the price please include it.) PLEASE MAIL ME RESPONSES AND I WILL SUMMARIZE TO THE NET! Thanks in advance! -- -- From the terminal of Morris Kahn (...ihnp4!wucs!afinitc!msk) -- Affinitec, Corp., 2252 Welsch Ind. (And if you know the price >please include it.) Yes, Concurrent DOS has some compatibility problems. However, I would expect that ANY multitasking environment would have SOME compatibility problems, as it will not be 100% the same as PCDOS. You might re-consider Concurrent DOS even if you find other solutions, as it is a BREEZE to use when the packages are compatible. I would expect more compatibility as time goes on, applications vendors are becoming more and more inspired to provide compatibility across various hardware and software clones. After all, why limit your market, when all you have to do is write 'well-behaved' applications. Keith Doyle {ucbvax,ihnp4,decvax}!trwrb!cadovax!keithd "You'll PAY to know what you REALLY think!"

<> > Yes, Concurrent DOS has some compatibility problems. I believe (somebody correct me) that Concurrent DOS from Digital Research does not support tree-structured directories. If that's true it's a fairly serious compatibility problem for hard disk users. > However, I would > expect that ANY multitasking environment would have SOME compatibility > problems... Good point. Many programs expect to have all of memory above DOS to themselves and simply go wild screwing around with it. Only programs intended to be used in a multitasking environment should be "trusted" under MS-DOS (or anything else running on an 8088, come to think of it). -- D Gary Grady Duke U Comp Center, Durham, NC 27706 (919) 684-3695 USENET: {seismo,decvax,ihnp4,akgua,etc.}!mcnc!ecsvax!dgary
